Fun Fruit Recipe: Sweet Apple Fritters | Future Expat (2024)

I grew up eating these apple fritters. They are shaped like a pancake and sprinkled in cinnamon-sugar. My mom always served sweet apple fritters for dinner as a side dish.

They are also easy to make for a crowd since you can fry them up in advance and then pop them into the oven just before dinner (see the note at the very end of the post on how to do this).

I got great feedback when I posted this recipe on Recipezaar (now Food.com). I love when people leave reviews and tell me how they served one of my recipes or the tweaks they made to the recipes.

Hint hint: if you try this recipe, please leave a comment and tell me what you thought and if you made any changes!

Here are some of the comments I got about the recipe:

Oh Karen, these were wonderful! I used to have them all the time while my sister and I were growing up. I used Splenda Sugar Substitute and we sprinkled them with confectioner’s sugar, Thanks for the memories, Diane 🙂

These were fun and different. I made a half recipe on a night my DH and DS were not home, for just DD and myself. She just loves anything apple, so of course she just loved these. I did put a lot more oil in my pan than suggested
basically made sure that I had about 1/4 inch of hot oil in the pan. I only baked them in the oven for 20 minutes, and they seemed quite soft and done.

I made these for Sunday breakfast using Splenda and 1% milk to make them a bit healthier. Great breakfast treat.

Loved it.. never had apple fritters before and so this was a very pleasant surprise! Made a minor change though – I used 1 egg instead of 2. I sprinkled some more of the cinnamon-sugar icing after taking them out of the oven and served them with caramel fudge and vanilla ice cream for dessert!! Next time I shall try with bramley or granny smith apples. Thank you, Karen, for sharing your lovely recipe.

Wonderful, wonderful! Don’t every recall having eaten apple fritters, but after making this recipe, they’ll definitely be on my dinner table time & again! Great tasting & a very nice addition to any menu! I look forward to trying a variety of apples in the future! Many thanks!

I love the suggestions to serve them for breakfast or with ice cream!

The recipe is perfect if you are cooking for just one or two, and just as easy for a dinner party.

Sweet Apple Fritters:

Ingredients:

2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
4 apples
1 lemon, cut in half
1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil or vegetable oil
cinnamon-sugar mixture

Directions:

I always start by assembling all of the ingredients on the counter. As soon as I use the ingredient, I move it over to the side. This makes it’s easy to make sure you don’t forget to include anything.

The first thing you need to do is to core your apples.

If you don’t already have an apple corerFun Fruit Recipe: Sweet Apple Fritters | Future Expat (3), you need to get one. They are inexpensive and make working with apples so much easier
and you simply couldn’t make this recipe without one.

After I’ve cored the apples, I use a peeler. I’ve found it is a lot faster to peel a cored apple than to do it first.

After you’ve cored and peeled your apples, slice them so they look like donuts with the hole in the middle. Each slice should be between 1/4 and 1/2 inch thick.

Squeeze the lemon juice over the apples. This will keep them from browning and give them good flavor.

If you are making just one or two apples, you can use a small bowl for the batter. If you are cooking for a crowd, pull out a large mixing bowl.

Beat together the eggs, milk, salt and sugar.

Then add the flour and baking powder, and beat it well to get the flour incorporated well. I’m lazy, so if I’m just making one apple for myself like the time I shot these pictures, I just use a fork. But if I was making a big recipe and had 1/2 cup or more of flour, then I would pull out the electric mixerFun Fruit Recipe: Sweet Apple Fritters | Future Expat (6).

At this point, you want to start preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Then add the oil to a large frying pan and turn it on high to get it hot fast. You may find that you’ll need to lower the temperature later a bit while you are frying so the apples get toasty brown while not burning at all.

Once the oil is hot, dip your first slice of apple into the batter, letting the excess drip back into the bowl. Add the apple slice to the frying pan and repeat until the pan is full
making sure that the apples are not touching each other. If you are making a large batch, you might want to get multiple frying pans going on your stove to speed up this process.

Flip over the apples as soon as they are lightly browned. Then remove them from the pan and place them in a single layer on a cookie sheet.

Don’t worry that the apples haven’t been in the pan long enough to get fully cooked. Remember the oven you are preheating
you’re going to finish them up there.

Sprinkle the apples with the cinnamon sugar mixture once you have finished frying the apples. Don’t worry about some of the sugar getting on the pan
it cleans up easy.

Pop the pan into the preheated oven and bake for 20-30 minutes or until the apples are soft when you test them with a fork or toothpick.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

If you are making these for a dinner party, make then in advance and refrigerate until you are ready to heat them up.Be sure to wait to sprinkle them with the cinnamon sugar until they are ready to go in the oven.

I’ve never tried freezing them, but if you do once a month cooking, they should work for you. Freeze the apple fritters on the cookie sheet or some other flat pan after frying and put them into a ziplock freezer bag. Just wait to sprinkle them with the cinnamon sugar until you are ready to bake so it doesn’t get absorbed into the batter.

Why are my apple fritters greasy? â€ș

The oil temperature is important!

The eggs you use need to be small and cold. Larger eggs have more water from the egg white, resulting in wetter batter and sad, soggy fritters.
